Shelter Valley is a unique small community on the west side of Anza Borrego State Park in San Diego Co. It has the Julian Zip Code of 92036, however this area is in the desert area below the treed town of Julian. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive from San Diego, 15 miles from Julian. It’s a high desert retreat from the city that is closer, and cooler than Borrego Springs by 10 to 15 degrees in the summertime.
Shelter Valley is surrounded by Anza Borrego State Park so no further growth is possible. It can also be reached coming from the San Bernardino area off Hwy 15 through Warner Springs, up from Ocotillo Wells on Hwy 8 or through Cuyamaca State Park or up from Ramona. It is a high desert environment though in centuries past was more habitable as shown by Indian relics found in the area. The ecology is dominated by cactus and open chaparral. Anza Borrego wildflowers in the spring are sensational.
The old Butterfield Stage Coach route passed through Shelter Valley on the leg between Yuma and San Bernardino. John Butterfield Co. ran the overland trail from St. Louis, Missouri to San Francisco from 1857 to 1861. Afterwards local stage companies and the Wells Fargo Co used the old trail. At Scissors Crossing the S-2 Hwy doglegs around San Felipe Creek near where the adobe building that once was the San Felipe Station stood. Only a historical monument now marks this spot. The San Felipe Station was between the Vallecito Station 18 mile ‘SE’ and the Warner Ranch Station 16miles ‘NW’. There are a few lost treasure stories associated with this route.
Julian was once a prosperous gold mining area and where there were gold and stage coaches there were outlaws. One story tells of ‘The Lost Treasure of Mission Ysabel’ being hidden on top of a hill near the San Felipe Station. Of course this hasn’t yet been found.
Borrego Springs
An unincorporated area of northeast San Diego County, Borrego Springs, CA has a zip code of 92004 and is a village within a park completely surrounded and protected by the amazing 600,000 acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Here in San Diego’s only desert community, the nearest stoplight is fifty miles away. We have no big box or chain stores. The slower, uncomplicated pace, the scenic beauty and the human scale of the place combine to produce a rustic, authentic desert experience, a special place, in all seasons.
Borrego Springs is not desolate, however. The California state park attracts thousands of people who venture out to experience this treasure. For those seeking the creature comforts, you can stay at one of the hotels in Borrego Springs, dine on a home-cooked, hot meal and venture out to the desert during the daylight. There’s a lot of exploration in store for you in the park which spans 900 square miles and is comprised of over 650,000 acres. Hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, 12 wilderness areas and many species of wildlife such as golden eagles, mule deer and big horn sheep can be experienced in this wonderland where nature’s hand touches everything. Located in eastern San Diego County, with portions extending east into Imperial County and north into Riverside County, it takes 2 hours to drive to Borrego Springs from San Diego, Riverside, and Palm Springs and approximately 3 hours to get there from Disneyland. Many visitors approach from the east or west via Highways S22 and 78. From the coast, these highways descend from the heights of the Peninsular range of mountains with spectacular views of the great bowl of the Colorado Desert. Highway S2 enters the park from the south off of Interstate 8.
In addition to the desert park attraction, Borrego Springs holds festivals such as Circle of Art in March, Peg Leg Liar’s Contest at Peg Leg Smith Monument in April, Cinco de Mayo in May and Borrego Days Desert Festival, the last week in October. The festival includes a parade, the Miss Borrego Pageant, a carnival, live music, arts and crafts.
Peg Leg Smith Monument celebrates a Gold Rush character named Thomas Long Smith or Peg Leg Smith. Peg Leg Smith was a prospector and story teller unmatched by most who knew him during the early to mid-1800s. Smith claimed he found pure gold nuggets in the Borrego Springs’ hidden hills. Though his golden treasure was lost somewhere in the hills where he could not find it, today you can remember him by throwing rocks on a pile near the marker that commemorates this character. The stone monument and plaque says, Let those who seek Peg Leg’s gold add ten rocks to this pile. You can find this monument on Pegleg Road exit to Henderson Canyon Road a few miles from the Borrego Springs Airport on Highway 22.
History of Borrego
The first record of a European in Borrego Valley was when Lieutenant Pedro Fages of the San Diego Presidio came in search of deserters in 1772. His pursuit led him northwest through the present town of Borrego Springs and up Coyote Canyon.
This event was related by Kumeyaay Indians to members of the first Anza expedition, who camped at their village in March, 1774. The Spaniards called this village (and spring) just east of the Borrego Sink, San Gregorio. It is the location of the original Borrego Spring. Juan Bautista De Anza was seeking an overland route from Sonora Mexico to Monterrey California. Proceeding west from San Gregorio, he and his party of 25 followed Coyote Creek and ascended Coyote Canyon. They camped the following night at the Cahuilla village of Lower Willows, now known as Santa Caterina.
It was another hundred years before cattlemen began homesteading the Borrego Valley in about 1875. The first successful well was dug in 1926, which quickly led to irrigation farming. By then, the town included a post office, a small general store, and a gas station. The military presence of both the Army and Navy during World War II brought the first paved roads and electricity to Borrego Springs. After the war, developers subdivided the area attempting to create a resort community by capitalizing on the tourism generated by the state park. Borrego Springs is an unincorporated community in the county of San Diego.
